Mandrake 10 rc 1.
US robotics 56k v92 connected to serial 11 (ttys0).
Will dial only in tone mode. No matter ATDT or ATDP chosen always dial tone.

KDE 3.2 finds modem but GNOME 2.4 fails! I mean what does any of those have with hardware recognition? Is this the way it should be?

If anyone has some sort of advice on how to force pulse dial on Mandrake I would be grateful. Thanks.

I'm completely new to Linux, tried yesterday to compile new 2.6.3 kernel to see if the problem will be solved, but got loads of errors, and found myself with kernelpanic on boot Reinstalled and still the same.

Ive tried several dial ups..I have Mandrake 9.2+..so i can use Minicom, kppp, or Vw Dial...are you using kppp? If so in Modem config, do your STRING ..ATPD and provider there......
.....that also works for me....in MODEM COMMAND....

then on you internet provider number field, you need to have something.....,Just throw a one (1) in there.....so kppp will work....The extra digit wont matter when the line is ringing the provider...Ive been messing with Linux for a few daynow..Im no expert at all...But it takes a lot of creativity and patience for working....I hope this was the least bit help for you...
