Actually there IS a VERY SPECIFIC reason to recompile your kernel, it's called SECURITY! The kernel, as wonderfull as it is, is hackable, there are kernel stack attacks that exist, and even though it might seam like a difficult thing to do, it is possiable, this is why I ALLWAYS recompile my own kernels and strip out everything that is not absolutely necessary, I don't have wirefire on my system why do I need the code in my kernel? Not only do you trim down your kernel and thereby eliminate some of the potential security risk, but you also learn alot about your system, granted this is not for everybody, but the fact that somebody is interested in learning how to do it shows that they are willing to work through it and want to learn rather than just blindly going along with what they were handed in life.

2.6.4-1 is sitting under the RPMS7 directory of the DVD or CD powerpack. which makes it available via other sources as well e.g. contrib, where this stuff came from.

I'm currently running 2.6.8-x-xmdk on my laptop which works fine with Mandrake 10.0 official.

When you are looking and can't seem to find things, one place I go to first is

http://rpmfind.net
