Kded and artsd sigsegv 11 ; KDE upgrade a good idea?

I have access to a couple of Mandriva 2006 systems. One of them is having some issues with kded and artsd. Kded regularly crashes (ie about once a day) with a SIGSEGV 11. Artsd does the same (even though I've disabled the KDE sound system for this user). I've already disabled everything that uses kded under "Configure Your Desktop -> Components -> Service Manager".

Edit: It's been some time since kded crashed, but here's a little more info on artsd. If I leave music playing, artsd seems to crash at around 0420, which I believe is when msec and other daily cron jobs run. I infer this because, when I do a "ps aux | grep arts" I find a couple instances of artsd that started at 0426.

I don't know what could be causing this, or how to go about finding out. It concerns me that it's only happening on one system.

I am considering upgrading KDE on this machine, because that should upgrade kded and artsd as well, but I'm not sure how to go about it. There don't seem to be official RPMs for Mandriva yet.

Alternatively, can anyone think of a reason why I shouldn't just uninstall artsd? I'm not using it for the sound system, after all. On the other hand, if there's something calling artsd every morning, won't I just be trading one type of error for another?

Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.
