kde/x not booting, space in / is 0

10.2 has been booting fine since i upgraded last week. however, i started getting problems saying "no memory", and couldn't run some programs(they'd try to load a die out)

when i restarted, the lilo gui would pop up just fine. i'd select linux(no dual boot) and it'd start everything up but the x server. when i type startx, i get a bunch of errors on starting the x server. when i type startkde, more failed messages. i get a message on the boot screen saying "checking for memory space.....[failed] space in "/" is <0>(which is less tan 20,000)
another error message i had gotten some time during my attempts to get the gui up is "no space in /tmp, tmp is full"

i still have access to all my files through the command line. just can't get a gui up. i tried starticexm and windowmaker but still no go.

before i restarted, i noticed it said my "/" directory was full. used to have 5.8GB of space.

the machine has a 50 gig harddrive, with only 8 gigs used. 512mb ram, p4 2.66ghz.

any help?

try going in and making sure your /etc/fstab file is correct and that / is mounted onto the right partition

okay will check that out..

also the first error i get when i 'startx' is an error about "fglrx" (might not have the letters exact)

when i boot up knoppix, it tells me hda1 is using 5.78 out of 5.8 gigabytes

i can't find where the 5.78 gb are....or don't know what all that data could be.

id check your partitions, make sure when you installed linux it didnt do something weird with your hard drive. also did you try mounting /dev/hda1?

I am having almost the exact same problem as icepack, except /tmp isnt full and I can boot into X. I have a 20GB harddrive with 5.8GB for /. it tells me that 100% of / is being used, but when I delete things and uninstall programs, it doesnt change. I have tried everything I can possibly think of...I went through my fstab, I tried remounting the partition, I booted off a live cd (which said that 5.8GB was being used and still wouldnt change when I deleted stuff), I went through 'ps aux' to make sure there wasnt some program that was eating all the free space. I cant find anything at all wrong with it. Once I find out how, I am going to try resizing the / partition to see if that helps at all.
I am running Mandriva 2005 Special Edition with kernel 2.6.11-13mdk.
Compaq Armada E500
900MHz PIII
128MB RAM
20GB HDD

if anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated

How did you upgrade? Did you choose that option at the start of the install?

I recommend always do fresh install, upgrade always (3 times for me and many times for others on this website) causes grief.

Either way I would do a re-install choosing fresh install and make sure you choose to re-format only the root partition and NOT the home partition. That means you will clear up hopefully your system problems but your data, settings will still be there.

And go for a more up to date version - 2006 is good! Make sure you download all the updates.

You guys who have full root partitions if you boot off your LiveCDs and then do
Code:

du -sh /mnt/whereimountedmyrootpartition
Post the results, it should be easy to see where a directory is out of proportion. I have 2 Mdv2006 machines with 5GB root partitions and they are fine with about 1.8GB free space.
