kde not starting when online. works offline.

im running mandrake 10 in a chrooted environment. when kde tried to start, it freezes at the second button with the wrench (starting services?) and will not go further. if i am offline, it works fine, but online kde stops there. i thought it might be a nameserver problem so i added one to resolve.conf, but it's the same. i solved this years ago once, but i can't remember what it was.

i also now have debian woody and slakware 10 on the same drive in chrooted environments also. the debian hangs like the mandrake does, but the slakware starts. i'm talking about when online with ppp. they all start when offline.
i've been messing with my host.conf, hosts, hostname, HOSTNAME, resolve.conf, the best i know how. Now the distributions haven't been booted normally since all these changes, and only get chrooted into and logged in with bash --login. debian's gnome was telling me it couldn't lookup something, i can'tremember, and now after these changes, it starts right up. Does kde look in a different place for these settings? Do i need to put the installation back on it's on partition, and boot it once, for some stuff to get set? i'm really just guessing that's what it is.
