I installed Mandriva 2006 on my Dad's computer this weekend, and experienced that it was very unstable on his PC as a whole. However, I was not even able to load KDE. It would flash the desktop like it was about to load, then the screen would turn black and return me to the login screen. Gnome worked OK, except that the individual programs were unstable. So has anyone experienced this?
I checked the hardware config and everything looked OK, but I am not that familiar with the hardware on his system anyways.
I'm not having any problems with Gnome or KDE, everything is working okay. Perhaps you need to adjust your screen settings. Mandriva does a good job at recognizing hardware, but, it doesn't always find all of your settings. At the summary screen was all of your hardware recognized?
yes, all the hardware was recognized during install and also in the config panel after install. During intall I set up the video settings too, which were well within the capability of the hardware.
There are several threads about this so search in the Mandriva forum. If you have a program called "kat" installed, that could be causing some of your problems, so uninstall it.

Thanks for the tip about kat, reddazz! Are there other things that kat can mess-up besides screen settings?
I don't think the screen settings issue has anything to do with kat. It could be a problem with xorg, so try updating using urpmi. Kat is responsible for slowing down the pc and using up a lot of memory. Its a search tool that was included by Mandriva, but it was still very buggy.

Thanks for the info regarding kat, reddazz! I've removed in from my system, and have indeed freed up some RAM. xorg could be mis-configured, agreed.
