Kde 4

Hi,

So KDE 4 is now out.... but how do I go about installing it? I can't find any instructions on the web for mandriva.

Thanks

KDE (the crew) probably only release the source code, for a start anyway, and instructions on how you go about compiling it. If you want to install it more easily, you're going to have to wait until your distribution maintainers have precompiled and packaged the thing and uploaded to the reposity mirrors. Then just use your package manager to install it; instructions and information is probably at your distribution website when that happens. Also some distributions might wait their binary-package release of KDE4 until their next distribution version, but it depends on the distribution. For example Ubuntu (Kubuntu) has already released packages for KDE4.

Hi,

From the KDE website http://download.kde.org/download.php....0.0/Mandriva/ there is a list of servers with all the RPM's. I'm sure I do not have to install each one individually, there must be a quick way?

Oh and I'm using Mandriva 2008.

kde4 is on the mandriva2008 free dvd.

If you prefer something more exotic try MDE repo.

Or

SoS http://seerofsouls.com/

There are instructions provided on each page too.

Hi GlennsPref,

It is my understanding that it is only a preview of kde4 that was shipped on the free version of Mandriva2008. KDE4 was finally released just a few days a go.

I'm not sure what you mean about something more exotic, but I see that the first link MDE repo has Thac's name at the top. I remenber reading a while ago about some bad rpm he had put out.

But Thnaks for the reply.

Well, accidents happen, but it is all fine now. I like the theme from MDE.

I was referring to the install instructions available on those pages.

You will need a repo with a hdlist for KDE4.

For example...

http://mirror.pacific.net.au/kde/sta...info/hdlist.cz

put this into urpmi... via a console....

urpmi.addmedia KDE4_stable http://mirror.pacific.net.au/kde/sta...0/RPMS/x86_64/ with media_info/hdlist.cz

Or if you prefer smart install manager..

smart channel -y --add KDE4_stable type=urpmi baseurl=http://mirror.pacific.net.au/kde/stable/4.0.0/Mandriva/2008.0/RPMS/x86_64/ hdlurl=media_info/hdlist.cz

These are mirrors in Australia, so just change the address to suit your nearest repo.
