KDE 4.1 on Mandrivia
Hi,
I am a total newbie, but how do I install KDE 4.1 on Mandrivia? |
guerrascience,
A very handy resource is the Mandriva User's Group. The answer was posted here just this morning by C.W. Hobbes. Quote:

I got it to work... but you have to install all the KDEbase4 components. However, KDE4 was slow and did not work well... oh well.

Thanks for following up with your "success" report, guerrascience.
I didn't want to say before, but KDE 4.1 has had its detractors. And installing it was not really recommended for beginners. It's still a bit "experimental". You just went to the head of the class. |
I've been thinking of upgrading to KDE 4.1 but after following some these instructions, I see KDE 4.0.3...does that actually mean 4.1? I'm not a KDE user but since trying Mandriva, I'll keep it around awhile anyway.
Thnx. |
If you want to stick with Mandriva and use KDE 4.1, I would actually recommend you install Mandriva 2009 beta, which ships with KDE 4.1 already.
You can find a list of download mirrors HERE. Once you have 4.1 running, whether it is on 2008 or 2009 you should look at this thread if you have an nvidia 7000 series or newer graphics card. |
If you download it now, you will be looking at RC1 which now uses NVidia 177.68 Beta driver.
I have tested this driver on 3 Nvidea cards and all worked very well in KDE4.1 including Desktop effects like the Cube, wobbly Windows with Shadows, transparency etc. Tested both on 8600M GT and 7600 GS cards plus another NVidia chip on a Lenovo T61 Laptop. So the base/default setting will now give you a smooth, working KDE4.1 with all the Gizmos if you turn them on. |
I'm using KDE 4.1 in Mandriva 2009 cooker. Can someone point me to a nice general howto for using KDE 4.1? I find all kinds of very specific howto's for this package and that but not a general howto. There doesn't seem to be a help file in 2009, and none in the repos.
Thanks. In faith, Dave Viva Texas We are Linux. Resistance is measured in ohms. |
Look for handbook

Look for handbook. like with konsole.. konsole handbook. it should find a browser to open with, then select "html" button in the middle, and you should get the chapter for konsole, with an index down the side listing all the other available handbooks. Hope this isn't too late, regards Glenn |
