Well that's just spiffy (and by that I mean annoying as hell). That SHOULD mean you already have the dependency that it's asking for. The only other possible problem is if you don't have a new enough version of the file. Could you do this:
urpmi libkdecore4-3.4.2
and tell me the exact error message that it gives? That's the base package that's giving the libmdns dependency error. Maybe that'll give us a clue as to what the heck is going on. I wonder if this is a bug with urpmi or one of the packages. Of course, if this DOESN'T give an error message and actually installs, it might fix your problem. If it works, then I'd say the next step would be:
urpmi kdebase-common-3.4.2
I'm sorry this is giving you such a headache. Trust me, I've had to deal with things that have given me similar headaches (trying to compile X, Mesa, and DRI for example... only to find out that it still didn't give me support for my video card for whatever reason) so I know how aggravating it can get when stuff just doesn't work the way it should.

For the first one it says
" No packages named ...
The packages are already installed"
The second one says
Some package requested cannot be installed:
kdebase-common-3.4.2-1mdk.i586 (due to missing libkdecore4-3.4.2-1mdk.i586)
libkdebase4-3.4.2-1mdk.i586 (due to missing libkdecore4-3.4.2-1mdk.i586)
libkdecore4-3.4.2-1mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied libdns_sd.so)
Continue? (Y/n)
I hit Y, and it does nothing. I cant force anything to install either. Im at my wits end...
Well now, I bring you this post from KDE 3.4.2. It turned out to be something other than the dependencies it listed. One package missing, and it screwed it all up. Once that package was in, everything installed like cake. I used the age old "urpmi -Uvh *" and it worked like a charm.
Do you mind telling what the dependency was just in case someone has the same problem? It seems like a lot of people are trying to do this these days. Also, what's your impression of 3.4.2? Good?

It wasnt the libmdns or libmDNSResponder like we though, it was something like libsod.so I think
I cant remember exactly, and I just urpmi'ed it, and it downloaded it on its own.
Hmmm, impressions of KDE
Well, initially it was ok, but of course, I set out to "enhance" it. It doesnt really look much like KDE anymore, since Im running baghira.
I dont have the transparency done yet, apparently I have to patch X for that to work, since it crashes on my machine (the transparency rednerer, not X).
3.4.2 feels much more snappy than 3.3.x which I was running earlier. Not near as much lag time when switching between applications or opening windows.
Download them into a folder named kde342, or whatever you like. So, for me, it was
/home/user/kde342
Now, cd into this folder and as root, perform the following:
rpm -Uvh *
It will throw up a list of dependencies, which you can solve using urpmi, either one at a time, or as a batch. The only two it would not solve for me were libdns_sd.so (which were causing my previous problems, as its needed by kdebase, and a few others, but not specifically listed as such) and libmdns. It said no package found. So, a google search pulled these two packages:
It is important to install the packages in this order, else, Mandrake tends to go a little off the reservation for some reason, at least, it did for me.
Another rpm -Uvh * revealed one more dependency, which I couldnt solve, either through google or urpmi. It turns out to be trivial.
Finally, issue a
urpmi *
and it will ask you about upgrading the 214 or so packages.
Viola, KDE 3.4.2 appears before your eyes, at least it does before mine.
