Karnel panic Mandriva 2007
 

Hi all,

I don't know anything about karnels, so I can't really explain the problem or how it happend. I tried reinstlling Mandriva twice but that doesn't get rid of karnel panic

To be able to help, more information is needed.

Did you just install Mandriva, and get a kernel panic on the first boot after install?

If you have not just installed Mandriva, did you make any software changes the last time it ran?

Can you accurately report the error(s) on the screen?

My computer froze. I turned in off and then when I turned it on again it gave my the error msg karnel panic. I didn't make any changes. Sorry, I do not remember the errors on the screen, i just remember they were a lot:) I reinstalled twice but got the same msg. I've done a lot since then and am full of error stories.

I decided to install Suse 10.2 network install. It was unable to install boot loader, so when it booted it got to a screen saying "Starting Ms-Dos" (??) and it stopped there. I was able too boot the system via boot.iso cd. The system was very slow, froze a couple of times, so I reinstalled it. This time instead of Ms-Dos is says that there is no operating system. I loaded the repair system program from the CD. It said that a package named smtp_deamon and sysvinit are missing. However, it couldn't install it. Tried to install boot loader a dozen times but no luck - ii returned an error msg "Error 21 - Selected disk does not exist". I went also to check the partitions and no mount points were set, although I did that during install. I tried to set them but it didn't let me - the menu was inactive.

Also, Gnome on the user account is broken - the panels are an inch wide and inactive.

You are experiencing a hardware failure. In order of possibilities: hard drive, processor, motherboard (chipset, south bridge)

How can I find out for sure and if it is hardware, and if it is, what can I do about it?
And, how can I trick the system into installing a bootloader?

If it is hardware, you need to fix it. Download the Ultimate Boot Disk and check out your equipment.

Good advice........

Try out a memory checker like memtest86++

And quite a few of the other programs will allow you to

check your harddrives (Know brand and model numbers, first).

Well worth the download and burd to cd.

To, me it sounds like memory, cpu overheating or a drive malfunction.

Kernel panics must occur due to dependent hardware failure or misreads from the

(ramdisk?) boot process.

It could also be misreads from the /boot directory-file system.
