I would check the install.
Of kaffeine first and xine, as kaffeine uses xine engine. If you haven't done so, update your package repos, in the software installer, rpmdrake. If you need to find repos near you goto easyurpmi (search) and follow the instructions. You should be able to update your system after that. I hope this is what you need, and wanted. Regards, Glenn p.s. You may find an error message about it in .xsession-errors in your user and/or root directory. Also logs in /var/log/ :) |
sir i do not know anything bout linux just starting out as a newbie and yes i have re-installed entire linux but it has not solved my problem i would be greatfull if you could guide me stepwise.
thank you. |
first, You might need to use urpmi on a command line like konsole or an other terminal.
Youĺl need to be root to do this. Then you can upgrade some of the packages involved, like kaffeine xine and any codecs you might want, like win32-codecs, real-codec and quicktime [from plf repos]. Thereś heaps of others, but see how you go. There is a really good guide by Ernie.... http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/..._Media_Sources post back with any questions, :) regards, Glenn |
sir,
im quite trying to get a hold of the link you posted me.i could understand that they were some packages which needed to be installed and im trying to install them but first im reading what all that means and how to install it through a console. Kindly bear with me as it shall be a little late than you expect me to do it .. Thank You for the support and i'll shall keep troublin with my stupid queries but i find them important as windows has made me dumb enough. pratyush gupta |
No problems.
Which console questions do you have? Did you go to easy-urpmi website to add repositories to your data base? If so, just copy and paste the list, from step 3, into a console and wait for the action to finish. It could take a while to down load as some of them are 50mb. After all that you should be able to upgrade the packages we spoke of. Talk to you soon, regards, Glenn ps. The only stupid questions are those not asked. :) Just Ask! |
From Ernies blog... you need the first 3 groups to get by. (standard)
quote: following the directions on the WEB site at http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/. (easy-urpmi) All users should set up at least the following (official) Internet Software Media Sources: Quote: contrib contrib_updates main main_updatesThese are the popular and system packages If you have no objection to the use of non-GPL'd or proprietary software add the following (Official) Internet Software Media Sources: Quote: non-free non-free updatesSome good stuff here You may also wish to add the following (Penguin Liberation Front) Internet Software Media Sources: Quote: plf-free plf-nonfree Media codecs and programs Mandriva cannot distribute end quote. Hope this helps, Glenn |
sir i had pasted the link and then executed the command on the konsole but it said command not found.but there is one thing that im logged in as another user not as the 'root' so i do not know now how to login as the root because i had created my own login id and now when i try to enter as the root it says invalid password though at the time of install it did not ask for a root password. But i shall try again to login as the root and for that i guess i have to re-install the enire linux.
will get back to you really soon. thank you sir. |
hllo sir,
now im faced with a new problem.i had now typed 'su' at the konsole to become a superuser and logged in as the root but now as i am entering the commands for downloading those packages it says "urpmi database locked". what do i do now sir?please help thank you. |
The data base is locked so you can't run more that one instance of the urpmi program.
If you can't see all of the instances or rpm [urpmi, smart, rpmdrake] running, In a gui, I use KSysGuard to explore all processes.[a process monitor for kde] So, open it up and type in a search for urpmi and rpm and if you find one, kill it. Make sure you have finished downloading, or you might have to start all over. regards, Glenn |
hello sir,
i'm sorry for disappearing for so many days,i was on a trip to home. Sir,i had tried killing the process name you mentioned but it said "insufficient permissions to kill the process".Sir i have another query as well, that whnevr at login i try to enter as root it says "root logins not permitted".how do i resolve this as well? thanking you pratyush |
As root edit the file, /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc
line 16 on my system, change to true. 14 [X-*-Core] 15 AllowNullPasswd=false 16 AllowRootLogin=true 17 AllowShutdown=None 18 AutoReLogin=false To kill a process run by root, you'll need to start ksysguard as root. In a terminal type su enter root password type ksysguard That will give you permission to kill a process. Cheers, Glenn type exit to go back to user. |
If what you are attempting to do is run urpmi, it is safer to open a terminal window when logged in as a regular user, then su to root:
Code:
[user@localhost ~]$ su I may be somewhat paranoid, but my thinking is that if something can go wrong it will (Murphy's Law), so I try to leave as little to chance as possible. After becoming accustomed to accessing administrative programs this way, I have come to find it inconvenient to open a root session to do the same work. I have been using Mandriva (Mandrake) since about 3rd quarter 1998, and I can not remember the last time I have needed to do so. |
ernie sir,
what i am attempting to do here is fix my kaffeine player in mandriva2008 which takes me back to the login menu on playing a video file.on being suggestd by mr glenn(i assume that to be his name) had suggestd me to select packages from a site and i simply copied the comaands from there n trid pasting them at the comaand prompt.i had logged in just the way you have described but it said that databases are locked.so i could not figure what to do with it next. thank you for your interest sir pratyush gupta |
urpmi or any other RPM management tool will create a lock file to control access to the rpm database while it is in use. If the rpm management tool exits abnormally, the lock file may be left behind. Also, if you have the Mandriva Online tool running and it is checking for updates, you may get a locked database error until it completes. If Mandriva Online shows a green check mark or a red exclamation mark icon in the system dock, it has completed its start up run. An orange question mark indicates a check for updates. If no other rpm management program is running, and urpmi returns an error that the rpm database is locked, the solution may be as simple as rebooting the system to unlock the database. If that fails, you can try deleting /var/lib/urpmi/.LOCK as root in a terminal window:
Code:
rm /var/lib/urpmi/LOCK |
