Just installed - Internet not working
 

This is my first time with Mandriva and I can't make the network access the Internet. I followed the instructions on the manual and the network assistant seems to be working and have a connection. I also can access my router at 192.168.1.1 with Firefox. But I can't access any external site whatsoever. Can someone please tell me what to do next?

On the task bar is there a icon show that there is a internet connection ? If you go to it ,it shows IP address and gateway
Did you,re router has a option to test the network connection ?

The icon in the taskbar has a green "tick" symbol. The tooltip says:

Network is up on interface eth0.
IP address: 192.168.1.100
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

I don't understand your other question, but I know the Internet connection is working. I can access the Internet with a wireless handheld. That's how I'm accessing this forum right now.

Which I mean is if I put the IP address of my router in firefox than I can access my router.
I can change the firewall settings test the connection to the internet ,the providers name my user account ,password and so on. In short configuring my modem-router
AS you have a IP address and gateway I agree that the connection is made.

Well, thanks for your help, but I just gave up entirely. I never got the Internet to work and I had quite a series of disappointments with Mandriva. It is not as good as I expected. Thanks again.

Hi, you may need to set a dns "nameserver"

Other files you may need to check, /etc/resolve.conf

Most of the other settings are in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts

Because you can reach the router, then it is probably either the firewall, or the domain name server can't be found.

You are right, Mandriva "is" very good, see how you go.

You see, I'm coming from Slackware. It is a great distro, but I am getting older and tired of so much manual geeky tweaking. I thought Mandriva would give me a more user-friendly experience. If I am going to have to rip through such pedestrian things as resolve.conf, then I'll just stick to Slackware, thank you very much. Other things didn't work as advertised too. Below my expectations, pretty much sums it up.

It's sad you uninstalled Mandriva has I find it pretty good.
I know you uninstalled it now but i'll still post some troubleshooting steps for networking in case someone stumble on this post.

First of all on a command prompt :

/sbin/ifconfig -- gives your ip addresses and subnet mask.
/sbin/route -n -- the 0.0.0.0 entry should correspond to you router or gateway.
/usr/bin/nslookup www.google.com -- the first line, Server, should give you the DNS server adresse your system is using and should be your router address in most common installations.

Once you have all those information, it should be really easy to troubleshoot the problem.
