Is it possible to pick kernel 2.4 while installing 10.1
Is it possible to pick the 2.4 kernel when installing MDK 10.1. I have a Cisco wireless card & they provide drivers & config utility but only for v 2.4.10 or 1.4.20-28. I have MDK 9.2 & could install that but, I really prefer 10.1. Thanks
When you boot with the install CD, press F1 at the initial screen. Follow help instructions for passing options for the install. Usually it will be in the form of
linux kernel=2.4.xxx
I booted the install CD & pressed F1 the help said use
alt0 kernel 2.6.xxx
alt1 kernel 2.4.xxx
I typed alt1, it responded with loading kernel 2.4.xxxx & continued. It prompted if I was installing from NFS, FTP, CDROM etc. I picked CDROM & went through the install. When it was finished, uname -r returned 2.6.xxxx. Do I need to perform an FTP install to get the 2.4 kernel, & if so what ftp site should I use? Thanks
Does the boot screen show different options? My lilo boot screen shows a choice between linux (my 2.6 kernel), 2.4.xxx (I think its 2.4.26.pre3.mdk something - not in front of that system right now.) failsafe, and windows. If you picked alt1 at install, it should show up at boot. Let us know what your menu items are.
Thanks for the tip. I hadn't looked that close at the lilo screen, I assumed that if I picked alt1 it would only install the 2.4 kernel. Anyway, it was there & worked great. Thanks again.
All you need to do to install the 2.4 kernel is to select the LSB box on the packages selection screen during the install.
As the 2.6 kernel doesn't conform to the linux standards base yet, it will tell you because you have selected the LSB box that it is going to install the 2.4 kernel instead of the 2.6 kernel
