Thank much....I am waiting...
then i login in system...I see the face of mandriva very like DOS (black), WHY ?
The simple answer is, X isn't running. What you describe, sounds like a command line interface. Try this, type 'startx' ( withput the quotes) and see if the gui starts up. If not, note the error messages and post back. With any X issue, please post the details of the video hardware you are using, the video card, monitor etc. If it is a laptop, tell us the make and model, and as much as you can.
Did you configure X during the install? Did you check the resolution is set to some value your system supports?
Thank cammorri much ! I reinstalled madriva X...And now it run very good ...but I havw 2 question can you help me ? The firt, I can't listen music in mandriva, I displaied some information but it isn't ...Second, I can't turn off computer as WINDOWN, when i click Turn off ,it will restart. what do I do to shoudown computer ? please help me soon! Thank...
To shutdown the computer, bring up a konsole, and log in as root. Type 'shutdown -h now' ( without the quotes ), and down she will go.
I can remember some issues around the shut down icons on the KDE desktop. I made some changes, and gave myself an icon that runs the above command. I'll dig up the info, and post how I did it, when I have more time. Right now, you will find the shutdown command will get you by for now.
Now as for sound, I will need some information to help get you going. I need to know what sound card you have, or chip set is on your system board. Probably Mandriva did not detect the sound hardware. You will need to load a driver, and configure Alsa. So, post the info, and we'll go from there.
Here is what I did to get a desktop icon to shutdown the system, I'm using KDE.
1. Right click the desktop in an open area. Click on CreateNew-->Link To an Application. KDE will open a proporties for a desktop application.
2. On the Application tab, in the command field, type 'usr/bin/halt'
this time with the quotes. On the General tab, pick an icon you like.
3. On a root konsole veryify the permissions of /usr/bin/halt. On my system I have it set as follows:
Code:
ls -l halt
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root shutdown 32 Jan 11 06:39 halt
If yours is not set this way, you can change permissions with the chmod command, as necessary.
When you create the desktop icon, it will be owned by your user. I had to add myself to the group 'shutdown'. I did that with Webmin. I know you can do that command line also, but I have always used webmin to administer my machines. So your choice here on how to do it. Have a go at it, and let me know if you got it to work, or if you need more guidance.
Thank for your help ! There is my sound card information in my mainboard guide"ADI AD1986A soundMAX 6 chnel oudio" and "version 5.10.1.4100" ...It is a onboard sound card...About shoutdown, Idon't known what type to log in as root. I brough console and type "shutdown -h now",then mandiva ask me password root, I said root password, but it isn't shoutdown, it restart...I don't known what ? Please help me to look drver sound and tell me how to load and configura it...Thank !
I went to www.alsa-project.org and looked up your sound card to see if there is a supported driver for it. It is not listed as a supported chip set. This is usually because there is a delay between the newest hardware release and the driver being written and tested for linux. However, I have found threads with others using sound driver snd-intel8x0. This driver supports AD devices up to AD1985.
You can try and load it, and see if it works. Here is the link to get the driver, and installation instructions.
To log in as root, most users use the 'su' command. su stands for switch user. So, if you open a Konsole, you will see a $ at the end of the command prompt. This means you are logged as a user. To get root access, type 'su' ( without the quotes ) press the enter key. The system will prompt for a password. You should have set a root password during install. Type that password, the cursor does not move. Press the enter key, and if successful, the prompt will change to a # symbol.
Now try to run 'shutdown -h now' ( no quotes ), and it should power down after linux has shut down.
Camorri, you are the best friend I can saw on the internet and i thank much about your help... I read your reply, but i can't find the exactly link to download the oudio packed in the website you gave me. Some link is not active, seem. Please send me the link so i can download it fast because i known very litle about the linux .
Dear !
When I clicked on the link, it took me back to the site with the driver, and installation instrutions. If you cut and paste what is shown, it probably won't work, since it is a very long URL, and only part of it shows.
If you can not get there by clicking the link, go to
Have a look on the left side for a link for 'Sound Card list'. At the bottom of that page there is a search field. In it, select the maker of your sound chip AD = Anaolog Devices and click go. You will get a list of all AD's supported chips and the driver. CLick that link to get you to the page I gave you.

You are very lucky to have had good help so far
(I mean usually some sort of homework is expected first)
Anyway we all give helping hands, no worries.
Enjoy linux. We all know it is frsutrating at first sometimes.
In the future try to be as comprehensive as possible with information, and think about your thread title
re sound
For what is worth you can try
su
draksound
and then select driver snd-intel8x0
A good way to test the sound is via one of the kde configuration menu called sound (there is a test sound button there)
Also check sound level with kmix (via menus)
or just as normal user type kmix in a terminal
(you can try aumix as well)

Emmanuel_uk, i did as you said, i type
su
draksound
and then select driver snd-intel8x0
but it it is not effect because i did this type againt and i see "your current card is snd-intel8x0...". But when i open kmix i can't see any information about cards, it have not. I click menu help and then click "hardware information". And i have some info, it say the card is not snd-intel8x0. I don't understand, can you explain me and what do i do now.

Basically we were testing the small offchance that i8x0 might
work with your card because it is a generic driver, and because the chipset
are vaguely similar.
It does not work, so you need to revert to camorri's instruction.
At least you have learned of draksound, and this will help
you with the other drivers. I am sorry it does not work.
If you have a chance post the output of lspci -v
and lspcidrake -v
(as root, just for the sound card)
The idea is then to google for linux + lscpi + hexadecimal id of card
and see if there is anything out there
