Interface eth0 missing after messing around with bridge

I'm having a bridge (bridge-utils) problem in Mandriva 2006. I was trying to connect my computer and my laptop using another computer with Mandriva 2006.

So far, I can't make it to work.. but that's not the problem I'm asking. See, when I'm deleting the bridge using brctl, it refuses to do so.

so when I typed this to delete my bridge, br0:

# brctl delbr br0

it says:
can't delete bridge br0: Operation not permitted

That's not all, it looks like my ethernet interface also gone. I swear it was there before I'm fiddling with this bridge stuff, I can even work my way with samba to get some files from my other computer connected by wire.

# ifconfig eth0 up

it says:
eth0: unknown interface: No such device

My wild guess is that my eth0 somehow renamed to br0, because when I'm trying to set up a new network interface from Mandriva Control Center and chose "LAN connection", it suggest "br0: D-Link Inc|DFE 530 TX+ Fast Ethernet Adapter" as it's default option. While before this mess, I remember it suggested "eth0: D-Link Inc|DFE 530 TX+ Fast Ethernet Adapter" as default option. When I 'upped' this br0 (ifconfig br0 up) , it works and I can send ping from my other computer as if it was eth0.

For additional information (just in case it's related to my problem), I'm using Shorewall and I already remove br0 from /etc/shorewall/interface file. I also delete /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-br0.

I know this might sounds silly, but I want my "eth0" back.

Oh, and sorry for my English because I'm not a native-english speaker.

Hi, you can find the config files /etc/sysconfig, networking and network scripts.

As far as I remember you bridge two devices in one pc to share a network through the one device.

If you delete what you don't want after a reboot you should be able to reconfigure your eth0 by the normal means.

by the way did you know that mandriva2008 has many problems found in 2006 fixed.

You may need to resort to the command line without X being loaded to reset this config and have it stick.

Cheers, Glenn

Ah thanks for the reply...

The thing is I'm in a country with slow internet connection, so I don't have the luxury downloading Mandriva 2008 (yet). Anyway, I already found out solution to the problem, I was poking around /etc/mtab and found out /etc/iftab by accident. Tt looks like the file mistakenly list my ethernet as the bridge (br0).

I don't know how it got there, I guess I was doing something (really) stupid.

Cheers, Ariel

mtab is written each time the system starts.

Anyhow I'm glad you fixed it.

Cheers, Glenn
