Installing KDE-apps on Mandriva One 2007 w/ GNOME
 

Hi! I just installed Mandriva One 2007 with GNOME as my desktop environment. I now want to install a KDE application, namely amaroK.

Is this possible in Mandriva One? (I know it is in Ubuntu.)

Its possible on any Linux distro. You need to go to easyurpmi and setup the main, contrib, plf and updates software repositories for Mandriva 2007. Once that done use the GUI interface to the package manager to install amarok or do

I install Amarok but when i try to start it, it fails saying I need "dcopserver" running, and another error says it could not find any sound-engine plugins.

Does anyone know what this means and how I can get Amarok running??????

Try installing amarok-xine. How did you install amarok? The dcop thing means that there is some KDE stuff missing and this is usually automatically installed if you used the methods I mentioned above.

urpmi -v amarok
should have taken care of all the dependencies.
If you did not use urpmi you are in trouble.

You might need (it is easier) to install all the kde desktop environnment as well as gnome (are you short of space?)

The only package I can find is the kdebase package. On Debian/Ubuntu there is a separate kde package which has more bundled apps. Is there a Mandriva equivalent?

No, Mandriva does not have a KDE meta package like Ubuntu.

There is one element I see that has not been addressed. Your original post indicates you installed Mandriva One. This is an installable Live CD and contains a very limited sub-set of the full range of software packaged for use with Mandriva Linux. To solve this issue, Mandriva has set up ftp mirrors around the world which include the Internet Software Media Sources (repositories). You can configure the Package Manager on your system to use these repositories. I have written an article to help others better understand this process on my LQ Blog.

Setting up these Media Sources may help simplify the installation of KDE or making Amarok work correctly on your system.
