Installing a Scanner on Mandrake
 

Does anyone know or have they been successful installing a scanner on Mandrake 10.1 Official? I have a Visoneer scanner powerport 7600 model that I am trying to install. It is installed off a parrallel port, off my printer. I tried doing a manual install using the MCC and tried using program that was named, I believe was Xane, but it would not detect the scanner.

Any tips or advice on how to set up or configure?

You will have to be using a module that is compatible with your scanner. Then you will need to point the module or driver to the correct port. A parallel port is probably lp0 or lp1 ect. You'll have to see where you have it hooked. Also I think that you need bi-directional support enabled for parallel port in the machines bios.

I think that USB devices work easier.

Google to see if your device's web site offers support for Linux. If it is parallel how old is it?

I'm not helping much but if you have the correct module-driver installed for the device and you have it pointing to the correct port and bi-dir support it should work. You will need to use some TWAIN compliant software to use it.

Visioneer will no longer offer tech support for their 7600 model and many others. They like to use the words "out of production". So in short, they offer no support unless you call their 900 line at $2.00 per minute.

What a rip.

This scanner was originally made to be used with Windows 98 and not Windows XP. There's a way around this install, but I have not been able to figure it out on Windows.

If they wont offer tech support for Windows I doubt they will offer any support for Linux.

Not sure a 100 %, but you should be able to use your scanner using Sane.

You will probably have to edit /etc/sane.d ( probably have to uncomment your scanner and uncomment scanner port - port 0x378- )

Dolphins1 I found xsane which is a graphical front end to sane.
It has a man page too. You might give it a try.

I just started looking at it, I had to run it as root to get it to work, I didn't know that it was there. It seems to be able to use my old Mustek.

I will try running xsane in root and see if it works, will report back with failure or progress....

I tried runnung "xsane" in root and it does the exact samething it does in normal user mode. I get the user agreement acceptance: I then click "ACCEPT" and I get "no devices available".

I did install the appropraite drivers for Visioneer 7600 Paperport Model when installing Xsane.

Visioneer scanner is installed on a parrallel port, not USB.

Any ideas?

Scanner on Mandrake
 

I got a USB scanner ( Musteck 1200 ub plus) for Christmas, Mandrake was seeing it as a Mustek bearclaw and sane was looking for a specific file when loading. I created a directory in the USR/Share/Sane directory called gt68xx(?) I am pretty sure that is the mane, I am not at my system to check the exact name, but you can find it in other threads here. I went to the Sane site and downloaded the file it was looking for in that directory and Sane loaded but would not scan. I went back to the sane site and found the file for the Musteck 1200 UB plus and copied it to the directory, still no luck other then actually getting Sane to load. Since Sane and Mandrake thought the scanner was a Bearclaw, I renamed the bearclaw file that I had copied from the sane site to bearclawOLD and then renamed the 1200 UB Plus file to the same name as the original Bearclaw file. It worked great. Sane just wanted the file to talk to the bearclaw, it loaded the renamed file which told it how to talk to the 1200 ub.
Gotta love that feeling of fixing a problem.
I know you do not have a USB scanner but perhaps this will give some ideas to try and also help someone else who happens onto the thread with a USB scanner.

Your scanner sound unsupported by sane, but as salcozzari explains the trick is to fool the system to get it supported with another driver.

Your scanner can be similar to another one and work with the same driver.

I never could figure it out so I installed VMWare on windows XP and installed Windows98 over the top on Windows XP. I know it sounds like a cop-out, but I could not figure out how to install scanner to work on Linux. I know that it would not install on windows xp, so I tried to cheat and take a short cut by installing Windows 98 with VMware.

In doing so I don't know what I did, but I can no longer access either of my CD or DVD rom drives any longer. It's like I am damned if I do and damned if I don't.

In Windows XP I double click on the CD or DVD rom drives and it says inaccessible. I don't understand why it is doing this.

In VMware it does not even see the CD-Rom player which it did see originally when I installed windows 98.

I have spent all day finally figuring out how to install and use my scanner, but now I can't access either of my Rom drives.

Tried some trouble shooting steps on the net and they all failed.

I don't know how you get there, but the only good thing with xp is you can get back in time and solve troubles easily.

You just have to choose a previous date ( one or two days before ) and you will get out of troubles.

Anyway linux is a way ahead !!
