installed "xscreensaver" but still no additional sccren savers?

was looking for more screen savers for my mdk 9.0
someone told me i need kdeart, can't find kdeart on my mandrake cds, i found xscrrensavers,
someone tried to tell me i need openGL to get it work, can't find openGL on cd.

anyway, slocate, found a brunch screensavers in my box, from the screensaver conf under that GUI interface, it won't give me a button or something for me to "import" these screensavers.

what is the proper steps i must follow, in order for me to get some new screensavers?

thanks

read the Readme, you have to start you have to enter xscreensaver-demo in a terminal window. you also have to disable screensaver under KDE.

Just for info, when I tried to install xscreensavers, it didn't work under kde, after all, they are "X" screensavers. Though I think you could be able to run them if you disable the kde screensavers.

To actually run it (if it installed OK) you'd have to type "xscreensaver &" (I think, and obviously no quotes and I can't recall if you have to do it as root or user).

I binned it eventually as it wasn't what I was looking for.

So, my suggestion is that you surf for "plf" (penguin liberation front) and follow the link on their page for "easy urpmi". This will update and modify your software sources - you should probably select the mirrors closest to you, then using the "code" that it throws up, cut and paste it into a terminal/konsole and let it do it's thing.

Then you go into mandrake control centre and under software management>rpmdrake>install you then select "all packages by groups>graphical environment" - you'll have to check graphical desktop, graphics and kde - and you should find various stuff to install for additional "eye candy". It's under titles like kdeartwork and kdemoreartwork (and titles like that).

If you followed the plf instructions properly, you should have both the plf rpm's and the texstar rpm's, both of which give you a fair amount of extra stuff to play with.

there's also kde-look.org there is all sorts of stuff for you to check out there.

For browsing, I use opera, and if you followed their "skins" link you can decorate it quite nicely.

regards

John

I think kde either lets you use the xscreensaver modules or programs in kde screensavers, or it uses a bunch of them some other way. At any rate, like the previous person mentioned, after you set up urpmi, and have the newest stable kde 3.1.4, you can use xscreensavers from there, but again, i think they have to be installed. Compiling them from tar.gz isn't really a big deal if you want the latest and greatest. I think I did rpm -ta xscreensaver-4.xx.tar.gz and that was it.

One other point, is that mandrake doesnt include some of the screensavers in their packages of xscreensavers, due to some infringment issue(which the author of xscr, says is bogus). And if you want to use the xscreensaver daemon, and have disabled kdes screensavers, you can have xscreensaver-demo start with kde instead. do a search for "use xscreensaver with kde" on google, and you should come up with a few ways to do it.. Good Luck.
