Installation configuration error

Hello all,
I tried to install tha package "pango-1.2.3" after downloading it from the GTK site, but during the pre-complile configuration process (by running ./configure in the rellevant path) I got the folowing error message:

No package 'fontconfig' found
configure: WARNING: No fontconfig found, skipping tests for FreeType and Xft
configure: error: *** Didn't find any of FreeType, X11, or Win32.
*** Must have at least one backend to build Pango.

Does someone knows what the heck that means and how to solve that problem?
If I`m not wrong I`ve seen something like that before when I tried to run "mplayer" after installing it and failed.

I`m using Mandrake 9.2 beta 2.

thank you

Since it can't find fontconfig maybe you should install it:
http://fontconfig.org/

Well ok, I did,
and then during the configuration of "fontconf" I got another error:

configure: error: cannot find expat library

What`s now?

just run "urpmi libexpat-devel", as root, if you have urpmi set up.

if not, use http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon to set it up, when it's up again.

hmm.

try "urpmi pango", it should automatically get any dependencies

If you have urpmi setup with web mirrors, not the CD's, it will get a newer version.

ok, now it sais "Everything already installed" and it doesn`t make effect.
i wonder if it could be because of the beta version bugs, which means i might be waisting my time on that....
however, just maybe...
