If you intend to install / try MandrakeLinux 10 Community ...

If you intend to install / try MandrakeLinux 10 Community, you need to understand this is not an Official or Final release version. It is still a developmental release presented to the Linux Community for troubleshooting purposes. In past versions [MandrakeLinux 9.2 and earlier], this would have been called the RC2 [Release Candidate number 2]. It is not recommended to install developmental versions of any software on production machine. If the computer on which you intend to install MandrakeLinux 10 Community contains any data you can not lose, do not install it. In a couple of months, MandrakeLinux 10 Official is expected to be released. You should wait for the final version to be released. If you have a test computer, this would be the correct environment to test MandraleLinux 10 Community.

I have written a review of MandrakeLinux 10 Community on Uptime at:

http://www.steidler.net/uptime/

The article is entitled MandrakeLinux 10.0 review, and was posted Wed March 17, 2004 if anyone is interested.

An good/interesting article Ernie,

To be honest, I didn't go to so much effort. I just downloade the CE iso's and md5sum (though for some reason, I tried one of the dutch mirror's twice and it gave me an identical incorrect md5sum on both occasions, for disc 1, so in the end, I downloaded it from a french mirror with no prob's). I just burned and installed (I actually selected update of 9.1, but it just did a complete install).

And thusfar, I've had no problems at all other than some of the updates gave me bad signature warnings than wouldn't install. This has obviously been corrected, because I got all the current ones installed this morning. The numbering thing you mentioned in your article is still there, I'm guessing, but it looks like it's counting 2 for 1, like when you select 1 update, it appears to think that the download is one part, and the install of the update the second part - as you say, cosmetic.

I know this is a bit of a liberty, but maybe you could have a look at this because bugs are something I know absolutely nothing about. I've no way of telling if I've spotted my first bug or not.

But as I said at the start, a good and interesting article.

Keep it up. The more stuff like that, the better.

regards

John
