IEEE1394 (firewire) subsystem not loaded

Hi,
Bought myself a new toy, a digital camcorder. Alas, I had no firewire-ports in my computer , so I bought a firewire card too. Even made sure it's chipset was supported and all. (Agere/Lucent FW 323-05)
The thing works in windows, so I didn't break it or anything, but booting to a different OS is never a good choice, especially when the free editing programs I have (Pinnacle studio dv clip 8 LE and Powerdirector Pro) both show marvellous tendencies to A. Crash B. Stop in the middle of capture without any apparent reason, and C. Not being any good when A. and B. are avoided.

I've tried modprobing various modules starting with ieee1394, but that has no effect. When I start up Kino, and go to Preferences, it says "IEEE1934 Subsystem not loaded" and obviously does not do anything firewire-related. Switching into Capture-view and the to Timeline crashes Kino. Every time.

How do I capture my digital video from my camera? The camera is Panasonic NV-DS65.

kernel

recompile your kernel and/or new modules. there are a lot of firewire options (including DV) there.

Umm.. no. Seems like it's only working as root.
