howto upgrade printer drivers gutenprint-5.0.0-rc2 epson and other Mandriva LE 2005

I have faster printing and more options to print with my epson printer
since I upgraded to gutenprint-5.0.0-rc2 http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/
(tested wuth gimp 2.2 and Ooo 2.0). It solved one problem I had: the cx 3600 printer
would nt eject a page when finished (i did not try to find if there was
a special way to feed a page via an eof)
AFAIK good for canon as well

Not that easy to install and am sure this mini-howto can be improved;
via the contrib I could not find a rpm package of gutenprint-5.0.0-rc2 (for 2005LE)
but I did not try very hard
I am no responsible if your printer does not work after all this...

You will need to install (may or not be an exhaustive list)
Name: libjpeg62-static-devel Version: 6b-34mdk Size: 177 KB
Name: cups cups-common libcups2 libcups2-devel Version: 1.1.23-11.1.102mdk
libgimp2.0-devel Version: 2.2.4-5mdk
docbook-utils if you want to try to compile the doc (I could not the error was
users-guide.sgm: command not found)
without docbook, and with docbook some other problems arise

Heavy handed Patch to prevent doc compilation

make
checkinstall (I tried with version 1.60 not 1.60beta4)
rpm -i /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i386/gutenprint-5.0.0-rc2-1.i386.rpm
It will tell it is still unhappy with /usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/
try
rpm -i --force /usr/src/RPM/RPMS/i386/gutenprint-5.0.0-rc2-1.i386.rpm

service cups restart
menu > system > configure you desktop > periph > printer > log as admin
change the printer driver to whichever suits you
quit configure you desktop
service cups restart

test your printer in Ooo
test your printer in Gimp (you will need configuring)
