Unhappy Howling speaker during Mandrake 10 boot on Dell Inspiron 8500

I just installed Mandrake 10 on my Dell Inspiron 8500.
During first boot the speaker howls at FULL volume (and then some...)
It's so loud that I have to turn the computer off - I fear for the speakers and my ears...
So actually I've not booted yet!!

What is wrong and how do I solve the problem?? Please take into account that I'm rather new to Linux.

howling speakers with Dell 8500

I have encountered this program with Fedora Core 1.

I think it is caused by setting the sound volume too high.

At least that's how I encoutered it . If you plug in a headset, the sound goes away. It seems to be some sort of feedback from the internal speaker to the internal microphone.

For some strange reason I was suddenly able to boot without noise from the speakers. I have now made sure that - via KMix - all volume is down to nearly zero.

Thanks for the help - and good advice about the headset!! (Why didn't I think of that ....

On my Mandrake system the same thing happened to me. Upon reaching the desktop when I booted the system I opened KMix and moved the slider for the AC97 icon to zero. The system sound is fine for all uses and the noise is gone.
