How to set hard disk power management
 

I have just installed Mandrake 9.2 on my PIII 1.0 ghz with 30gig hdd and so far so good. One question I have though - is there somewhere in the gui to control when the hard disk spins down and goes to sleep? I notice there is a power control for display, but so far have not found anything for drives. In addition to hdd spinning down, how would you suspend under Linux?

I'm not sure about the spinning down, however, in KDE there is a suspend to disk on the Application menu. There is also a suspend in the display power control..:scratch:

Suspend to disk works perfectly on my laptop, Mandrake 9

It creates a suspend image, and the PC turns off.

When I turn it on, it resumes back to my linux (like Window$$$ Hibernate option)

However, when I close the laptop lid, then it doesn't works (the suspend does works, but when I turn the pc on, all I see is a 1% brightness LCD, and I have to restart my machine)

Any ideas?

Try switching to a terminal first (like CTRL+ALT+F1) and then as root
# service dm restart

That should restart whatever you're using for an X display (KDE,gnome, etc)

you may need to download a newer version of XFree
