I've got a Jetway motherboard with the audio codec AC97. Mandrake 9.2 uses via82xx sound module, but I don't know how to make it play a sound.
Alsa is running, but when I run XMMS (also totem, etc.) it hangs and I do have to kill it.
Try to switch to other driver offered by draksound tool. Atleast I had two options in a pulldown menu. You have to atleast logout and log in after that.
I guess the default is alsa driver and other option is OSS driver.
For more information see alsa-project web pages to see if your soundchip is supported. There is also user comments for each driver. Page is http://www.alsa-project.org/ -> supported soundcards.
