How long has Mandrake been going?
 

How long has Mandrake been going? I think this was my first distro but not sure at the time it was a root version.

I am looking for my first Linux distro I followed it with Redhat then went to Fedora which I used until 2006

What other distro were going in 1990's that were given out with Magazines or could it have been Mandrivia?

From wikipedia:
It later mutated into mandriva (a fusion of the French distribution Mandrakelinux or Mandrake Linux and the Brazilian distribution Conectiva Linux), but both distro's are now discontinued (according to that same wikipedia page), since 2011.

Not sure what "root version" means but I started my Linux journey in late 1998 on Mandrake. Easy install, easy to use. Can't remember the KDE version but I ended up switching to Gnome v1.0

I guess I did to at that time they kept giving it out with Linux mags I think I had Red Hat before that even before 1986.

Truly a magic trick since the first Linux kernel was released in 1991.

I was using Linux in Philips in Nürnberg Germany in the 80's maybe the 70's

Back in 1994, the 720KB 3.5" floppy was just making its appearance on magazine covers, it had been the 5.25" up until then.

It wasn't until the CDROM appeared, quite some time later, on the covers, that full distros became a regular feature.

Prior to 1991, it would have been some form of unix, (maybe BSD).

I'm just going to guess that you meant UNIX.

No it was Linus Torvald I had just read about it. Then I got some floppys with it on.

Have you not heard of floppys then? Had 8" and 5.25"?

They were definitely called Linux and there were 3 of them on 5.25"

Mageia, which just released v. 7, carries on the Mandrake tradition.

I've been using Mageia on various machines since v. 3 and have become quite fond of it.
