Hi, I would like kate(kde text editor) to open a new tab in the/any existing kate window.

I use kate for everything except cli editing (vi) and writing essays (OO).

But this one little nag has me confounded.

For instance, if I am reconfiguring squid, iptables and my network settings, when I click on another file in konqueror, I get a new instance of kate. I sometimes end up with 3 or 4 instances open, and sometimes when I close stale files, I fear that the savings may be overwritten by them.

Any tips?

Yes, just go to: kcontrol -> KDE Components -> File Associations -> text -> file type (e.g. plain)

Now choose kate in the right list, hit “Edit…” and go to the programs tab, change the command to this:

That should do the trick.
