high memory kernel
I'm running Mandriva One 2007.1 on a P4 whitebox with an nVidia FX5200 and 1 GB of RAM. Haven't had any hardware issues so far, but dmesg says the kernel is using only 895 MB of RAM and recommends upgrading to a highmem kernel. uname -r identified the default kernel as 2.6.17-13-legacy. so I installed 2.6.17-13 from /main and booted into the new kernel to find the Window Manager isn't working properly (no minimize or close buttons). Is this a video driver issue? The repositories don't seem to have any nvidia modules specifically for the non-legacy kernel. Would appreciate advice about upgrading to a 'high memory" kernel.

(edit) I think the new kernel install has left a few things incorrectly configured. You might try re-installing dkms and anything with xorg and nv in the name. Then recheck your settings for the display and display manager (kde, gnome, etc). (end edit):) You can get the nvidia drivers for linux from nvidia. http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html The legacy kernel is meant for very old systems, you may want a i586 processor(pentium class or better) variant. same goes for the nvidia drivers, amd64, ia64 are for 64bit kernels, either amd or intel processors. ia32 is for all 32bit PC processors You won't need dkms for the graphics after this, but it may be required to load some other module for the kernel at boot time, so be carefull cleaning up afterwards. Thanks! Will give it another try. I guess my nvidia driver needed to be recompiled with the new kernel.
