The XF86Config-4 is the one created by the fglrx ati drivers. You can remove that.
As I mentioned in my first post I think it was, that you would need to turn off DRM in the kernel to use the ati drivers as it will cause you grief. But not to worry. We will try the xfree ati driver for now. Could you edit your last post and put the XF86Config in that one for me and delete the "-4" one please

I also notice that the driver section on the -4 config doesn't show fglrx. No matter just yet. Post your standard xfree config and delete the -4 one and I will tell you what to change.

That definitely is the full file - there isn't anything else in the file - thats why I copied XF86Config-4 first - because it actually had my current driver - the Intel i810.

However, what I recommend you do, is try and make your own. Load up a console screen and su in with your root password and do

This will guide you through making a new config file. just follow all the prompts and you will be fine. Use the one I posted to help you. Also, make sure you have your monitor refresh rate information handy
After you have made and saved the file as XF86Config in /etc/X11, edit the file and change this section to uncomment the lines that I have uncommented (remove the #)

Thankyou very much - I finally booted into KDE on my Hercules 3D Prophet. I took a while, but figured out that startx kept using XF86Config-4, so I saved my new config file from xf86config to XF86Config-4, and I managed to get in.
I tried changing the color depth from within Mandrake Control Center - but it fecked up, so I did the process again and left it at 16 (I do know it can go to 24)
Can I please ask you to take a quick look at my new config file to verify that it is correct?

It looks fine but you need to uncomment the lines (located near the top of the file):
# Load "glx"
and
# Load "dri"
So remove the "#" from those 2 lines only. Also, as I said earlier, you can delete the XF86Config-4 file and then the system just uses the XF86Config file
Once you have uncommented those lines, reboot the system and open up a console and type
Code:
glxgears
and it should run a small window with a few cogs spinning and post the output into the console screen. If you can do that and then post the output for me
I uncommented both those lines - and now I get no output. So, I then changed it so only dri was uncommented - and now it works - but because glx hasn't been loadedd - glxgear will not be loaded - is there any reason why
Load "glx"
wont work?

I'm just searching around looking for something which would give me some insight into what's causing the problem. You're saying that you actually uncommented the Load "GLX" section but then you couldn't access kde or any graphical login?
Yes, I uncommented Load "glx" and then logged out, typed startx back in the screen went completely black - the monitor was off - and even CTRL+ALT+BKSPC wouldn't stop it (I was told this would stop x if it wasn't working)
hmmm, sometimes somethings will stay running etc... I know it's a longshot, but I'm running out of ideas... sorry. Can you try rebooting the system completely, whilst having that line uncommented?
Okay, I have just posted a link to this thread in the Hardware forums of LinuxQuestions as I don't think I can be of much more assistance. So hopefully, someone can see exactly why glx isn't loading and if you don't have it, explain how you can obtain it for mandrake.
