Fresh install of Mandriva 2008 Live.
Soundcard Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller is listed in hardware.
snd-hda-intel is listed in 'lsmod'.
snd* appears several times in 'lsmod'.
[don@Main ~]$ aplay combo5.wav
combo5.wav: No such file or directory
[don@Main ~]$ su
Password:
[root@Main don]# aplay combo5.wav
combo5.wav: No such file or directory
I tried to play the Amorak tune but no sound.
Also, hardware in drakconfig list the sound device as Intel
Whereas kmix list it as Realtek.
combo5.wav is any .wav file on your system. Most distros give you system sounds, try playinf one of them. You will have to look for it first. You wouldn't have the file on my system.
The reason for this is to stay away from files that may require codecs to play. The problem could be as simple as install codec files, but I don't know that until you try to play a .wav file.

What type of file were you trying to play?

Don't worry about that for now. It is a Realtek cip set in your sound hardware. Since your first post indicated you do have a sound driver loaded, I did't ask you for that information. I would guess you have a file called snd_intel_hda loaded, and shows up what you do a lsmod | grep snd. It might be worth the time to run the command and post the results, just to verify that is good to go.
If you go into MCC --> hardware -->soundcard--> information
do you see a driver loaded? What does it list your sound card as?
Depending on the chipset, I have seen some threads where the user had to add some parameters to get sound going. Don't sweat that until we know if you can unmute and try aplay somewavefile.wav.

Reason: Adding information.
Can I suggest you try 2008.1 RC2 live or wait a few days for the official release? I have a PC that I have put RC2 on and the command line set-up to get the HDA going seems to have disappeared.
If you search for Intel HDA both here and on the Mandriva forum you'll find posts from me on how I fixed it on my laptop. It's a bit of a pfaff, but looks like 2008.1 has nailed it. In fact you'll find loads of posts all over the web on this chip set.
For 2008.0 I had to mod the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file by adding at the bottom:
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba index=0
Somewhere on the Alsa site there's info about which options for which manufacturer.
Your sound card is reported as being fixed in Mandriva 2008.1 (Spring) which is scheduled for public release April 9, 2008. Since the Internal (private) release (scheduled April 2, 2008) was two days late (released April 4, 2008), we should probably expect the public release to be a few days late as well, so look for it by around April 12, 2008. I believe you will be best served to wait about a week and install the Spring edition.
I did as DiBosco suggested and downloaded (15hrs) Mandriva 2008.1 RC2.
I'm a little nervous about using Cooker, but...
Sound works right out of the box!!!
However, it's not very loud.
The Mixer shows it at 100%.
At least I'm back online with my main box.
I've only been able to get online with my Eee PC.
Run kmix; it's in the Sound And Video submenu - or you can type:
kmix &
from a konsole.
Click on the little speaker in the system tray then click on the mixer button. Have a look at the plethora of sliders on there, play with them until the sound comes up. You'll be fine then. :~)
Skype can be a bit weird, but I usually get it to work by fiddling around with all the different options - including the tick box to allow Skype to automatically set it up.
