help with install

I installed mandrake 9.2 yesterday and the install went fine. However, on reboot the system would lock up. Therefore, I did a complete format and reinstalled. This went fine until reboot now all that comes up is L followed by 01 for about 1/2 the page. The computer is frozen at this point and has to be rebooted. I reinstalled four times trying different setting to fix this. Any ideas this is my first time using Linux.

Sounds like lilo isn't being installed correctly. Can you pick grub as an option instead? That's happened w/me once or twice too and grub has come through in the end.

At what point during the install would I pick this. What does lilo do.

Lilo is a boot manager - it tells your computer what operating system to boot into. Basically, it gives you a choice of what to boot up. Grub is another boot manager. It's a little different but it works well. I don't know at what point in the install you would choose - maybe someone else w/more recent Mandrake experience knows?
