Lightbulb Help newbie here (sound n modem problem)

I got a problem on my laptop (acer 1400XV) and running mandrake 9.2 (downloaded edition)
plz someone kindly give me an answer

here are my problem (previously in laptop and handheld topic)

no sound some one tell me to download ALSA driver, and modem not work (smlink modem)

"about alsa which one should i download ?? driver ? library or firmware?
i got some not from the web site how to fix the sound n modem problem in acer 1400xv.

here are the quote.
"Build and install (insmod) the modules (in this order if modprobe has problems): ac97_codec soundcore sound i810_audio .
Adding "i810_audio" to/etc/modules seems to do the trick.

cd /dev; MAKEDEV all
chmod 660 /dev/audio /dev/dsp

adduser *name_of_normal_user* audio "

can someone explained it??
and in my mandrake9.2 there isn't directory audio n for information the person i quote is using debian linux.

and about the modem problem, i've downloaded the driver from smlink.com.
but i cant compile the file, i just exctract it but when i use
./configure comend it says " bash: ./configure: no such file or directory"

and in the redme file from the modem driver says i should modified line "KERNEL_INCLUDE:/usr/include" to something like "KERNEL_INCLUDE:/urs/src/linuxkernel/linux" the problem is in my mandrake (fresh install from downloaded version) theis no kernel file just in the /boot there is a file called linux2.24.22_10mdk, should i downloaded the kernel file first?

helpppppp
"

since anyone havent reply me yet, does anyone know where to get linux kernel header for mandrake? coz i'm not the member of mandrake club, plz

I can't really help you with the sound and modem, but I can help you in getting the kernel source (if that's what you mean by "kernel header") ;^)
If you haven't installed the kernel sources during the system installation, (which will be placed in /usr/src) you can run the software installer that comes with Mandrake 9.2 and manually install the Mandrake kernel source. You can also get a fresh copy of the kernel at http://kernel.org
Hope this helps!

silly question about the sound. Have you gone into the volume control and made sure that the sound is actually turned up? I ask because Mandrake (along with most flavors) default to having the sound levels set at zero.

sorry if u think my question is so silly, i overcome the sound problem. although in the lspcidrake my soundcard point to intel ICHT2 if i used that driver the system gone wrong. Sometimes the sound server say failed n make my computer frezee. So i try used intel i810 n it works. I dont know why but it work for me though. FYI, before i change the driver i alo have set the volume to 50% n no sound, now fix, thanks for the suggestion.

N for the modem haven fix yet, but i try to download the kernel, because the modem driver tell me to include the kernel header to makefile source, which i don't have one already. In my mandrake /usr/src/ or in /usr/local/src no linux kernel file only in /boot i found one, but i dont know wheter its a full kernel or not.
And about the compiling problem its happen but when i compile for other program i can compile the program n run smoot, so i think maybe the driver ? So i try to download the driver again.

I'm so sorry if u all think i'm so silly. I'm still a novice to linux. So ill learn a lot bout it.

thanks for all who replied me.

Once again, I was calling myself silly, not you. I'm really sorry that you took it the other way.

Install the kernel-sources rpm.
This is because MDK 9.2 cds for some stupid reason don't include the kernel sources!!!
U need to download it from some mdk mirror.

hmm is the kernel file downloaded from kernel.org is same as kernel from mandrake ?
coz from what i heard some distro's make a bit diferences to their specific kernel so sometimes kernel download directly from kernel.org not work in the correct way, n causing some error.

thanks.
i've download the kernel source 2.4.22-10mdk.rpm from rpmfind.net

btw, by default mandrake install kernel to which directory ?
i look at my laptop there's no /usr/src/2.4.22-10mdk directory, so where mandrake installed the kernel ?
to /lib/modules/kernel/2.4.22-10mdk/ is that the kernel directory ? but i don't find the /include directory there....

so if i install the kernel source which i download from rpmfind.net i must specified it to install to /usr/src/2.4.22-10mdk directory ?

and one other question.... will i start from a scratch again if i installing the kernel source ( i mean i have to install all driver 've installed previous? n other program) ?

why i cant make a boot disk which contain lilo ? i get error msg disk space insufficient when i create a boot disk using DrakFloppy ? (i used a blank m$ dos formated disk or should i formated first by ext2 system)

thanks.

i hope someone tell bout the answer i look for.....

Just install the rpm - it will do its job. The sources will be installed to /usr/src/linux-2.4.22-10mdk
