help: keyboard doesn't work after upgrade XFree86
hi,
i've having problem with my keyboard after upgrading to XFree86-4.4.0 last nite. i upgraded X windows to work with the new ATI graphics driver i downloaded the other day (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=243227). it seems ok after the X windows binaries installed, but at mandrake graphics login screen, i couldn't type in my password to log into X-windows, Caps Lock key doesn't work either. keyboard simply gives up. here's what the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and /var/log/XFree86.0.log look alike, can someone tell me how to fix the keyboard problem? i'm having a ATI Rage Pro card. It is unlikely that this is a keyboard problem.
Rather your system is freezing up in loading X. Start by trying to specify kernel parameters to find the cause. nolapic is one of the most common ones needed by motherboards. However if this gives you the same results, try noapm noacpi nopcmcia nousb noagp in this order until you find which one cures the problem. |

That error is inconsequential.
It has NOTHING to do with the keyboard freeze. Humor me and try what I told you. A couple of my laptops produced exactly the same results you are seeing (BTW: ATI video too!) until I did this. |

Anyway, there seems to be some problem with the interaction of the AGP driver and some of the other kernel level motherboard resouce handling modules. nolapic is frequently a cure for the problem you are seeing. Apparently this came up after the kernel added additional motherboard level support. ATI video systems seem to exacerbate the problem. Mandrake actually documented this in the 9.2 errata. However on a couple of machines I've installed Linux on, this has happened with many different distributions including LiveCD based ones. On those machines either they will freeze during boot, or I get EXACTLY the same problem you are seeing. I also saw the same keyboard error message which led me to the same conclusion as you. I tracked down the latter only to find that this deal with extended multimedia buttons on keyboards and was not required and not to blame. To make these machines work I end up trying different combinations of parameters at boot time (it IS possible to manually specify them by hitting tab at the boot screen...) and then typing something like linux nolapic noagp nopcmcia etc. Once I have things running I went back and tried again specifying one less arguement until the system gave me the same problem again. This way I could narrow it down to the offending module. Now it's varied for me from machine to machine. In one I had to specify "nousb" on another "nolapic" or "nopcmcia" on one desktop system. After I found the cause I was able to add the arguement to /etc/lilo.conf and forget about the problem. |

The easiest thing to do is to start up the machine in FB mode or any mode that drops you to the console prompt (not the gui!).
Then mount the DVD or CDROM and go to the directory containing the ATI driver RPM's from the original install. Finally rpm -Uvh --force ATIXXXXmdk.i586.rpm using whatever rpm's are applicable. This should reinstall the old driver. Then backup/rename the corresponding configuration file in /etc/X11/ and run XFDrake to configure things again. |

i can't find any mdk rpm package go by that name on the 3 disc set of my download version of mandrake 10.0. maybe the package is under a different name? |
The packages are called ATI_kernel-2.x.x*.* and ATI_Glx*.* and ATI_GLX-utils*.*
I found them on the \Drivers directori of my Mandrake 10.0 DVD release. |
hmm, i still don't see those files on the CDs, maybe they aren't made available for download version of mandrake.

does anyone know how to uninstall XFree86-4.4.0 package from my pc? the upgrade causes all sorts of problems and i wonder if i could rollback to my previous state without having to reinstall the whole thing. |
