Help...Changing resoultion

Ok im a n00b at linux ok...so i installed mandrake everything went great. so then i reboot. and it gives me choices linux, somethingelse, and fail-safe. i click linux and it goes to a black screen where it checks everything. and it says ok next to it. after that still at the blackscreen it says to login so i do. and then it shows kyle9013@local.....something rather...but from there i dont know what to do? i type help and it shows stuff. but im still stuck. last time i used mandrake on another computer. all it did was came up with Lilo where i can select the operating system.. someone plz help...

Ive typed startx to start the login screen.
but it comes up with this on my monitor
90.0Khz/60.0Hz
Frequency out of range
Try other resolutions

but i didnt get to choose a resolution i think that was only at the begining.

ive tried xorgcfg but then it said im not root. how do i become root in the console thing.
i log in with my name and password. but i guess im not root and im the only user on the computer. im using mandrake 10.

so i need to get root. so i can go and access the xorgcfg so i can change my resolution.

Thanks for the help.

You can type root instead of your name at the login and then give the root password or you can use the su command once you logged in as normal user.
If you have become root then you have to run XFdrake (case sensitive) it should work in text mode too, and setup your monitor and choose the right frequency (refer to your monitor's manual).

to change to root at the command line type su and press enter, it will prompt you for the root password unless you slected no root password in the instlation. As you type the password nothing will appeare on the screen but it is working, when you press enter you should get a root@localhost prompt, or equivelent.

su stands for switch user, you can use this to change to any user (if you know the password) by adding the user name afterwards. e.g. su richie. if you do not supply a user name it assumes root.

Hope that helps.

Ok well all that seemed to work thanks verymuch. now im at the Desktop KDE, and i thought you were able to switch to different interfaces? like Gnome and stuff like that. i know i was able too b4 on the other computer which had mandrake. or maybe its because im logged in as root now? and not kyle9013. how do i make myself root now?

Also i memember that it had a graphical login screen to do your username first then your password and then u choose your session...like KDE,Gnome,WIndowmaker...there was a bunch of em. is this accessable in 10.1?

Thanks again i really appreciate the help

10.1 is old now and it's unsupported no more bug and security fixes.
The graphical login screen is called KDM. You can setup to start it automatically in the MCC.

Hi, Yes you need to have KDM installed, it probably is by default. But you also had to install the other desktop enviroments at install, or later by adding the software. If you have installed them, and your computer logs you in automatically, click the k menu and either start a new session, or end the current session.

You will now see a login screen, and hopefully at the bottom left there is a button that says session type. If you click this it will let you select from the differnt installed desktop eveiroments.

Since you are a newbie I suggest you to try the new live CD called One. It's just one CD so you don't need to download too much and it's a live CD so you can try it before actually installing it.

The newest version is 2006... at the moment I think it is november that 2007 comes out. If you try the One cd, and like it I would download 2006, and install and remember to install gome as well as kde + any other you want.

To install kdm go to the kmenu click system, configeration, install software, you will be asked for the root password, in may ask you a question, say yes, and search for kdm, tick the box, click install... follow any instructions for puting in a cd if required.. Thats it.

Try to look for kdebase-kdm in the package manager. Also look in MCC for automatic graphic logins and boot manager setup.
