Gnome, KDE, desktops oh my!
 

Ok, just got my HD set up (I'm a newb so this was a HUGE accomplishment) and have some desktop questions. Thus far I have been using KDE with linux. What would happen if I logged in with gnome? Would anything adverse happen? Also, what if I try to play 'gnome games' (gnome chess or whatnot) while in KDE. What are a couple fundamental differences between the two? Thanks for your help peeps

nothing adverse will happen to one desktop should you want to login & explore another. in fact, i recommend it so you can decide which DE (desktop environment) you like the best. all desktop settings are kept in your /home directory, so things will be as you left them when you switch from one to another. and, yes, you can play Gnome games in KDE & vice versa. you can also run Gonme apps in KDE & vice versa. welcome to the world of Linux! :cool:

Nothing special would happen if you logged in with gnome.
And you can play gnome games and use gnome applications while in kde.

There are a couple of diferences between gnome and kde and basically it's up to you to decide which one you like best, I myself use kde, I've tried out gnome a couple of times and found it ugly and non-functional.
But this is my personal opinion, there are many people out there (and even here at my office) who prefer gnome and find kde bloated ....

Try out both and decide for yourself.

One being that the GNOME environment uses the GTK+ UI toolkit (C based) whereas KDE uses the QT UI toolkit (C++ based) - "traditionally" the cause of much consternation :D - on the subject of different desktops, might also want to try XFce - more minimal than the other two, but worth a look.
