Gnome desktop icons gone.

In gnome the icons normally an the left side have dissapeared. If I try to use one of the items in Places The error message (Could not open home.uncledon.xxxx. No default action exist for this xxxxx. Any program I have tried will access these files normally. Also right clicking on the desktop produces nothing. I think in some way I have deleted the desktop. KDE doesn't seem to be affected. The first time this happened was shortly after I had instlled Ubuntu Edgy on the other drive replacing 6.10. Ubuntu usually makes some minor change to Mandriva so I reinstalled Mandriva 07 PP. The icons were there but the next day when I booted they were gone. I searched and found a post of about the same problem in which the person said that he/she updated the EEL and that fixed the problem. I found that EEL is an extension language but I have no idea how to update it. I also don't recall seeing any thing on restoring the desktop if it has been deleted. Thanks Don.

Desktop Icons gone

Sorry for the delay getting back. I finally did a new install and the Icons are there. I think what happened was I did a right click and one of the Icons and said move to trash, and the next time I booted they were all gone. I recall removing the welcome Icon on the first install and had a folder which a program placed on the desktop and the second one which I sent to trash with a right click. If I need to install again I will check this out. I did create a folder on the desktop and did a drag and drop to trash without damaging anything Thanks Don.
