Could you explain a little further on how to use the prefix thing in Mandrake? A step by step mini guide would be great! Thanks!

Some package requested cannot be installed:
superkaramba-0.34-1mdk.i586 (due to unsatisfied xmmsctrl)
do you agree ?

What exactly is xmmsctrl and how can I fix it?
First only use cooker releases if you ABSOLUTELY cannot find a specific release for your distro.

In this case SuperKaramba is available for both 10.0 and 10.1 in Contribs and PLF.

But (required newbie reading) you -MUST- first set up your URPMI sources.

Follow the directions here:

http://www.zebulon.org.uk

Once done, all you need to do is as root type in

urpmi superkaramba

and everything including required support packages will be automatically installed.

This is like explaining engine repair in a mini guide here.

It's both too long, and already been done...

Anyway the short of it, is that you need to pass the appropriate parameters for the "MAKE" command.

one which is usually required for linux is the --prefix-dir=

e.g.

make --prefix-dir=/usr

however sometimes others are required.

If you find your compiles are failing, it is usually because you are missing something which the compilation requires.

Make doesn't come out and tell you what this is, neither do the tar.gz (source) files...

BUT the .src.rpm packages DO, as will the binaries.

This is why you ahem, SHOULD REALLY QUIT SCREWING AROUND WITH THIS...

and either utilized the precompiled binaries or at VERY VERY worst the .src.rpm's files as I've indicated repeatedly.

urpmi will automatically set things right on your system for you, so to speak, so the files will compile.

After you have set up the URPMI sources as I indicated previously you'll find zillions of additional packages available which you can install all with a click of a mouse.

Lindows tries to charge you for this "privaledge"... yeah right.

xmms-ctrl is optional for the compilation of superkaramba. If you are missing it and it's flagged by Install Software as a missing dependancy, it's unfortunately wrong. You should be able to compile the .tar.gz for Mandrake without problem. In fact 2 of the 5 people on our dev team use Mandrake.

./configure --prefix=/usr
make
make install

If you are still having problems, please post in the superkaramba forum..
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=67470

Thanks,
-Ryan

Yup as he posted,

PRECOMPILED binaries!

Then use urpmi to install them to pick up any dependancies.

xmmsctrl

The xmmsctrl rpm you're looking for can be found on CD 2 of the Mandrake 10.0 cd's. If that doesn't work for you just look for it here. This is the best rpm finder on the web that I've found:
