FTP and Telnet Access

Hi
I've got my Mandrake Linux 9.1 installed and I now want to be able to Open a Telnet or an FTP Session from my Windows PC to my Linux Box.

When I try to do this I get a message to say that Linux has refused the connection..

Do I have to set something up to allow Telnet and FTP(FTP is installed and Running) Connection.

I have Apache Running on Linux and I can Access these pages from Windows and I can Ping the Linux Box with out any problems.

Hope Someone can Help

Peter

Consider installing sftp and ssh instead of ftp and telnet. Just as easy to use, but secure.

People will say, 'yeah but my LAN is behind a firewall,' etc. Still, why run insecure servers when you can have secure ones? You don't even need to use passwords; you can put PGP keys in /hosts/allow.

Anyway, all these servers are on your Mandrake install CDs. Install them. If your linux box has its own firewall running you need to open port 22 (or, better, keep port 22 closed and setup a rule allowing connections from the other computer).

Keep us updated...

Hey Flossie.

Did you enable shorewall (default Mandrake firewall)? You can check under "configure my computer --> Security --> Firewall".

That said, it seems plain that your problem is that your computer is refusing connections... you must have some sort of firewall installed. If shorewall isn't doing it for you, take a look at Guarddog. Its a really simple firewall (I really love it), and comes on your CDs.

I agree with mac_phil. Keep us updated.

Thanks to everyone who posted message to try and Help me. Finally last night after sitting for about 4 Hours I managed to Solve the Problem.

The Reason why I could not telnet to the Box was because I had not installed the telnet Daemon. One I had installed this I was able to Telnet with out any problems.

The FTP problem was sightly harder. I discovered that FTP wasn't running when it was trying to start up it was falling over with an error cannot find IP for Host. After a bit of Investigation I added my hostname and IP to /etc/hosts and it started up OK. However I was Still getting an error saying that Port 21 was in use.

I finally discovered that I was trying to run proftp both in standalone and inetd mode. One I had stopped one of them and restarted everything I could FTP no problem.

You mention that I would be better using sftp and ssh. Could someone explain to me what these are and how they work. I'm new to all this stuff and have only ever used Telnet and ftp.

Thanks again

Flossie

There is nothing to explain, really. SFTP and SSH are just encrypted versions of FTP and TELNET. Usage is the same. Instead of telnet user@host, ssh user@host. Instead of ftp user@host, sftp user@host.

When you use telnet/ftp, your password is sent in plain text across the internet. Anyone running a 'sniffer' program can easily steal your password.

SFTP/SSH sends only encrypted passwords. The daemons are on your CDs.
