from kernel 2.4.19 to 2.6.3, how to?

I'm running mdk9.1 with the kernel 2.4.19 on my MB Asus A7V8X-X and the sound and the NAT card don't work properly.
I have read that upgrading up to kernel 2.6.3 those'll work but I have also read that it isn't enough, I should have to install other packages as well. But which one?
Any helps or any links to any HowTos?

To make the change to the 2.6 series you will also need to upgrade module-init-tools. You may also want to consider skipping 2.6.3 and going straight to 2.6.5.
