Angry Freezing solid, troubleshooting entry point?

Hey guys, I love Mandriva. Like REALLY love it, I love it more than peanunt butter on ice cream and I love it more than back massages (giving AND receiving).

Problem is that somewhere around the 10.1 to 2006 bit something was brought out into the distro that freezes my IBM T41p laptop damn solid (mouse won't move, keyboard does nothing (not even numlock) no hard drive activity) after about 10 minutes of use and I can't figure out what package I am urpmi'ing in that is killing it off. Now there is no core dump, no kde error log or anything like that being created when this happens, is there somewhere that I can look to see what might be causing this? It's driving me nuts, I've had to rebuild my laptop off a 10.1 DVD a few times and it works for a while until I install some software that downloads and installs whichever the screwy dependency is and the whole lot freezes solid again.

I've heard that KAT can be a problem.

Kat is a kde catalogue for search functions, it has to build a database to be able to do this.

I have not had a problem with it, but then again my PC only slowed down a bit while building its DB.

If you can find the skip list for urpmi (/etc/urpmi/"skip.something?", (i'm in M$ at the moment))

Add kat to it.

This may not be the problem, an other way to see first would be to turn the daemon off in the MMC.

Configure my computer/hardware system, you can stop it from loading.

There's a lot of other stuff in there, so don't switch off anything your system may need.

2006 had quite a few showstopper bugs not just Kat. They are fixed now so try to update immadiately, after you uninstalled Kat of course.

hrm, reinstalled and tried to update but it still goes for a while and then freezes. I even installed 10.1 and then did the update straight to the 2007 gear leapfrogging 2006 (cooker stuff) and it still freezes. Any ideas where I can look to see what might be causing it?

Unhappy 10.1 and freezing

Hi,

Of late, I've had exactly the same problems...

now keyboard is dead - except when I log in as root, everything works fine.

However, don't want to became a root user for obvious reasons.

Just updated everything today. Didn't change a thing.

Pointer sometimes crashes and have to reboot. Very annoying.

It's impossible to do anything in KDE when the keys won't work though.

Any new help?

JDW

To see what's eating up the system resources start konsole and launch

It shows you a lot of things but probably the CPU and memory usage is the most important in your case.
