Free Text Editor?

Want to start the long overdue overhauling of my website in time for the new "UK" football season but not fussy using NVU. I am running Mandriva Spring and would like a "free" text editor similar to Notepad if possible. Recommendations anyone please. Thanks

Hello. If you are using KDE, you might want to try Kate - which should already be on your system. That's what I use when I am in KDE. Or you might want to jump in at the deep(er) end and learn ViM (or Joe or Pico or or or....)

Can't wait for the season to kick off. What's your site?

Good luck

Kate includes formatting support for many languages including those you may need to use when scripting a WEB site. It also supports multiple sessions (you can have several files open in one session, then start another completely separate session with its own set of files. If you will be working with many files simultaneously, Kate is an excellent choice because of it lets you organize your work sensibly.

Another editor included with KDE is Kwrite (an outstanding text editor, but each file is opened in a separate window). Kwrite includes formatting support for many languages. Kwrite does not support multiple sessions (which in turn support multiple open documents), but it is simple to use. If you will be working with only a few files simultaneously Kwrite is an excellent choice.

A third editor included with KDE is Kedit. It is a very simple editor and supports no formatting of any kind. There is no support for multiple sessions, and each document is opened in a separate window. If you do not want the advanced features of the editors mentioned above, Kedit is fast, simple, and it does support spell-checking, but I would not recommend using it for scripting a WEB site.

Mandriva includes many other editors (too many to mention here). Open the Mandriva Package Manager. Maximize the window. Select Editors in the Package Category List (left). You will then see a list of available editor packages in the Package List pane (upper-right). Highlight a package in the list and its description will be displayed in the Information pane (lower-right).

HTH,

Another great choice for editing a web site is Quanta+ ; the package's name is kdewebdev.
