I would like to know if a firewall is embedded in the Linux Kernal,it appears to be the case but always seems transparent to the user ie it never seems to warn of any intrusion. Also I would like to know if Smoothwall requires a separate dedicated machine inserted between the host computer and modem with a usb or rs232 connecting the two computers.
Most "IP-Tables" based software firewalls will write a security log. Are you used to seeing it pop up like zonealarm or norton (using windows) when you get a hit?
try using tail -f /var/log/secure (as root, or course and/or
tail -f /var/log/messages
Yes, Smoothwall requires a dedicated PC. It uses network cards and a ethernet cable to connect the computers together. If your not using a hub or a switch you will need a crossover cable.
