Firefox 1.5 on Mandriva 2006 powerpack glibc error

I'm trying to install firefox (from the firefox website)
Here is the error I get on typing ./firefox
*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0x08c3ce20 ***

Somebody suggested this was because of some change in glibc behvaior
and to add the follwing line in /etc/profile:
export MALLOC_CHECK_=1 #Report error and continue

I did that and now on running firefox, i get a host of

*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0x08c3ce20 ***
type messages and finally:
./ line 131: 7784 Segmentation fault "$prog"

Any idea what to do ?
