Files not showing up on desktop

When I download files from the net and save them to my desktop, they don't show up! Never have, I've always worked around it by saving to the home dir. However when I was pluggin around today I noticed if I do a dir under the Desktop folder in a shell all the files are there. But minimize and Gnome shows nothing.

I'm not in GNOME ATM, but if you right click on the desktop is there an option to show all files?

If you can't get them on, then just 'mv' (move command) them into the documents folder, eg. 'mv switch.mov documents'.

well the move command is fine but it's mostly a large PITA. I ust did a reboot and the files i created before I rebooted are there but when i make a new one they don't show up.

ahh.. I think that's because it's not refreshing...
If you right-click is there a refresh option?
