eth0 won't come up automatically

Hi,

Am running Mandrake 10.1 Community, but had same problem on 10.0. Basically, my broadband modem is connected to eth0, but I can't get it to connect automatically on boot up. After I log on, if I open a shell and run 'dhclient eth0', this bring it up, and it works fine until I have to reboot.

Does anybody know how I can make it boot automatically? I'm fairly new to linux, so any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

It's been a while since I've used Mandrake, but there used to be an option in the Mandrake control centre, under hardware/network (?) to set whether Eth0 goes up at boot or otherwise.

Otherwise, you could have a look at your /etc/network/interfaces file, and add 'auto' to the primary interface entry (man interfaces).

Cheers,

mj

goto "star"(start) "system", "configuration", "configure your computer", to get to the hardware control center, as mentioned above.

select "network and internet" select your device and check the box "to start at boot".

[edit].. Make sure the program closes down properly, I had heaps of trouble at first, when the program would freeze for ages, and I would close it, (wrong) just wait while it looks up your dns host.

It should finish with a warning to restart the system to avoid host name conflicts. You should restart then.

although, having said that, I'm pretty sure 'start at boot' is already checked - I'll uncheck it and have a play... ;o)

Well, that did the trick for me! It worked. I unchecked it and then rechecked the "START at boot". I also UNCHECKED the 'hotplugging' feature, whatever that is. Now it boots up with full internet access. Thanks
