errors on Mandrake CD's

Here's an interesting problem....

I went to install xawtv rpms and softdrake reported a "bad signature" for some of the dependentcies... on further investigation I found the packages were located on CD1 not CD3 as requested by the installer.

My questions would be..

1) how do I correct the situation if possible
2) would I be able to create a DVD of the 3 CD's and have all the rpms in 1 directory to get around the problem in the future.

I ran into this problem before with the disks for version 10.1 and ditched them thinking they had gone bad..

Thanks in advance,

Tony

In most cases packages with 'bad signatures' are just fine(unless urpmi says it cannot install it), and as long as you have the option to choose(whether you want to install or not).
You can also try copying the package from the cd to the harddisk and check if the size of the package is the same and no errors(redundany cyclic errors) were reported, if the copying goes fine, then the package is fine too, and you can go on installng it.
If you have a pretty decent internet connection, you can ditch your cds and set up online repositories(sources having the latest rpms), these would generally have the latest rpms(which include updates).

You can create a dvd that stores all your rpms, but i dont think it'd be possible for you to install the whole os from scratch using that dvd. But yes, all rpms in one directory in a dvd is possible.

Thanks abattoir,

The reason I posted the question was because softdrake couldn't find the files to install. When I had a look at the CD it requested, they weren't there either so I had a look at the other 2 CD's and found the files on CD1. In otherwords, what ever file tells Mandrake which CD to get the files from is out of wack.

I did eventually just copy the RPM's to the hard disk and install them one at a time.

As for repositories, I was successfull doing it in SuSe but not so in Mandrake. It is having a problem getting the *.cz files from the ftp server. By the way, what would be a good server for Mandrake? The 2 servers I found kept stalling during a download which might be causing my setup programs.

Regards,

Tony

softdrake(you mean RPMDrake?, reminds me of XavierP ).

You can remove the cdrom sources for urpmi(RPMDrake) if you want. Instead you can add the folder where you have all the rpms(in the hd) as a source.

As for mirrors, i use 'ftp.free.fr'(ftp.proxad.net), it has never broke down on me. I found a canadian mirror at EasyURPMI .

If you are familiar with the command line, you can use urpmi(which actually masquerades behind rpmdrake). It is(at least seems) easier, and gives you a sense of control .

see URPMI @ LQ wiki for more info on urpmi.

Oh right.. RPMDrake....

Thanks for the info abattoir, I was at least able to find a few rpms and install manually at least... funny though, I can download manually and install but RMPDrake comes up with "bad signature" errors. I just think the database files are out of wack with the directory structures or something to that effect. And that's from both the Repositories and CD's.... royal pain!

Regards,

Tony

By the way, any idea on how to get a ATI AIW card working for video capture/ TV?

nope. But there is a tv card setup utility in mandrake control centre. Check it out, maybe that'll be of help.
