If you're the only person using using Java on that box, you can put the following information in your .bash_profile file (if more than one user accesses Java, put it in /etc/profile):

Basically, for Firefox if it's installed in /usr/local/firefox and you're using java 1.4.2 installed as below, change to /usr/local/firefox/plugins and type
