Dual Boot with XP - Mandrake will not open the GUI

hello. Complete noob here.
I have installed Mandrake 10 official on 2nd HD - WinXP pro on the other.
Installation went ok, and when I boot up I get the following options:

linux-smp
linux
linux-nonfb
263-7
failsafe
windows
floppy

Windows boots ok, but if I choose any of the linux options I get to the login options - login ok - and then at the prompt after logging in I am typing: startx

but the following error occurs:

Fatal Server Error: No Screens Found
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on x server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Anyone familiar with this?

Thanks

Hi,

I've never encountered that exact problem. However, try this:

su (to become root)
telinit 5 (switch to run level 5 ).

See if that gets it to boot into a GUI

I had a similar problem with Red Hat 9 on my HP laptop. Couldn't run XWindows for the life of me. I finally upgraded my XFree86 and followed these instructions. Course your monitor and card information maybe different. Make sure that you have the right chipid as well.

looks like you have a mismatched XF86Config-4 file in /etc/X11. You can either manually adjust it using an editor like vi or try running xf86config. Have fun I always do when I have to mess about with Xfree

If you have a DELL pc you may need to look at updateing your bios, try google.
