I'd say lilo is looking for the wrong drive to find root and consequently /etc/...

Unless your compfortable hacking the boot loader, Maybe with the help of a live cd, then I'd reinstall.

I know you should be able to edit the boot loader but write permissions have been a problem for me.

This kind of thing has happened to me in the past few months when I've upgraded the kernel and each time I've had to resort to a previous version to boot, uninstall the new kernel and then retry again later.

I may be having a separate issue to you, but when I saw your question I thought it reminded me of my problem.

Dropt into Shell

Hi Glennis

Thanks for information Have discovered that FSTAB is now missing from /etc

Have tried Knoppix to drag and drop FStAB from working Mandrake 10 but
inspite of being in root unable to copy to /etc Mandriva 2006

etc/fstab Permission denied.

My Mandriva system was fine untill screen lock up and I had to reboot.
Have experinced sytem screen lockup before with Mandiva 2006

Do you back up system to help reinstalation after crash?

Maurice

There is a backup facility in the mandriva control center, or "configure My Hardware" system area (i think, in winxp right now)

Dropt into a Shell

Hi Glenns

Thanks once more for information
I gave up trying to repair Mandriva 2006 and reinstalled
from CD.
Rescue repair for errors seems not a simple issue
Working once more .When will the next crash come??

Regards Maurice

Hey, may be not.

Mandriva is a good distribution.

I try to keep in mind the first time I used windows, linux is similar because it's new to us.

But don't give up, there are heaps of things to read, try the RUTE documentation, it is very extensive.

The tutorial section here at LQ is good too. The LQwiki is another place to get tips and tricks from.

All the best,
