Drivers...

Hey all,
As most of you know I'm a newbster, so be easy on me if it's a dumb question.
So I'm delving into Mandrake 10.0, no problems yet, just learning. So someone asks me 'bout drivers. I stop and think to myself... What 'bout drivers? I haven't installed a single one for my video card, cd drives, or sound card... So I'ma lil bewildered. I never even thought 'bout it until now and haven't seen any problems, why haven't I had to install drivers?

Also, a neat feature I liked in XP is it will auto detect USB devices and also when the semester starts up I'll be using USB thumb drives a lot, will Linux auto-detect these things? Plug & Play? Also, if it's a thumb drive, will it treat it as an add-on drive?

Yep, usb should work OK, you can see the output in a console when you connect/disconnect devices.

Drivers are modules, some are built into the kernel
and some are called for during the boot process.

Hey, I appreciate the input Glenn. Could you elaborate on what you mean when saying this...
